1. president trump proposed gun ban for transgender americans

Personally, I am suspicious that President Trump is trolling the Democrat gun-controllers with his proposal to ban guns from transgender Americans.

But, just in case this is a real proposal, VCDL strongly opposes any such measure.  All peaceful, law-abiding American citizens have a fundamental human right to keep and bear arms.  We already have laws disarming those who have been committed for mental health treatment following appropriate due process.

2. vcdl asks shenandoah county sheriff carter to reduce chp fees

My letter to Sheriff Carter:

Dear Sheriff Carter,

VCDL is a statewide, grassroot, non-profit, gun-rights organization with 11,000 dues-paying members and another 61,000 email alert subscribers.  Our mission is to champion the fundamental human right to self-defense and ensure the liberty of all individuals to own and use firearms responsibly.

I am contacting Virginia localities that are charging $50 for a concealed handgun permit (CHP).  Many of the sheriffs and police chiefs that I have contacted were unaware that Virginia law only allows them to charge enough to cover their cost of doing the CHP background check.

The CHP fee has three components: a fixed fee of $10 for the Circuit Court Clerk, $5 for the Virginia State Police, and up to a maximum of $35 for the law-enforcement agency running the background check.  In many localities, the background check fee has been dropped to zero, as with modern technology background checks can be done in a few minutes.

When the $35 maximum background check fee was established by the General Assembly, Virginia required fingerprints to get a CHP.  That accounted for almost $25 of the $35 fee.  About 10 years ago the fingerprinting requirement was dropped, but the $35 was not reduced at the same time.  Localities that continued to charge $50 were now making a profit of $25.  That was not what the General Assembly had planned when it set the fee.  Here is the law that sets the background check fee to no more than the cost to the law-enforcement agency:

§ 18.2-308.03. Fees for concealed handgun permits.

  1. The clerk shall charge a fee of $10 for the processing of an application or issuing of a permit, including his costs associated with the consultation with law-enforcement agencies. The local law-enforcement agency conducting the background investigation may charge a fee not to exceed $35 to cover the cost of conducting an investigation pursuant to this article…

The reason for this letter is to bring all this to your attention in the hope that you would evaluate your costs and lower, or eliminate, your current $35 background-check fee accordingly.

VCDL tracks the CHP fees statewide.  If you want to see what other localities are doing, here is the link:  https://vcdl.org/page/chp-fees-per-jurisdiction.  Recently, Wythe County Sheriff Anthony Cline dropped his CHP background check fee to zero, so CHPs there are now $15 total.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me at any time.

3, VCDL Treasurer interviewed on gun freedom radio [video]

VCDL Secretary/Treasurer Pat Webb does a great job in this interview with Gun Freedom Radio, done last month at the GOA G.O.A.L.S. conference in Tennessee:

This is an excellent video by firearm attorney Tom Grieve with statistics on just how often armed citizens stop public mass shootings and other violent crime!

5. senator tim kaine says our rights come from government?

Virginia Senator Tim Kaine shows an extreme lack of knowledge on the founding principles of the United States!  It’s flat out embarrassing that Kaine ever got elected.

6. vcdl has new statewide gun show coordinator and assistants

Rowley Molina is stepping down as VCDL’s Statewide Gun Show Coordinator.  Rowley took the position when we needed someone as the statewide gun show coordinator, and he did a great job!  Many thanks, Rowley!

John Gosney is the new Statewide Gun Show Coordinator and has two assistants to help him:  Dave Morgerson and Steve Rochkind.  VCDL leadership appreciates John, Dave, and Steve taking on this very important role! Rowley and Bryan Dunn will be getting John and team up to speed so they can hit the ground running.

11. shocker: former atf senior official now works for everytown

“The former ATF senior official who worked with Mitchem said she was smart, a good communicator but very anti-gun.”

Say it isn’t so, Joe!  Surely the BATFE wouldn’t hire people who would use their position to diminish the rights of American citizens!?

12. sasha stone speaks about the second amendment

A VCDL member sent me this:

Good evening! I'm not sure if you're aware of who Sasha Stone is, but she was a well-known liberal leftie that is active in Hollywood circles.

Over the last few years, she has been writing about how she's grown to see the left for what it is, and to see the MAGA movement for what IT is by following a lot of President Trump's rallies.

She's a good writer, and I've been following her story. I thought this article may be of interest for you or the VCDL membership. Thank you (all of you, really) for the work you're doing. We don't seem to have people in the legislature that stand up for gun owners, or the gun rights of people who don't own guns. I appreciate the effort that all of you put into this organization. I'm happy to be a member!
