The police chief for the City of Richmond is once again floating the idea of an illegal gun ban in the Shockoe Bottom part of the city.
Here are some snippets from the video, below. My comments in red:
Richmond Chief of Police, Rich Edwards:
“The reason Shockoe Bottom is a concern, and also other pop-up parties are a concern, is for the possibility of mass shootings,” [Every neighborhood in the United States has the possibility of having a mass shooting.]
And,
“So many of the folks we’re encountering are not criminals. They don’t have a criminal history. They just think it’s a cool thing to do to bring my gun to the city,” [Welcome to America, Chief! People have things and do things they think are cool. That is not dangerous or illegal in and of itself. But I guarantee most are carrying, not to be “cool,” but to protect themselves and their families. And that is a sacred, constitutionally protected right.]
And also,
“We want you to come to our city, we want you to enjoy the great restaurants we have and the nightlife, but leave your guns at home, and we’ll provide the security,” [Oh, my. Chief, the U.S. Supreme Court has said several times that the police have no legal obligation to protect any individual. So, if your officers fail to protect me, I’m dead and your officers are free from any legal repercussions for that failure. And if you can provide such impeccable security that I should totally trust my life to it, then why are there so many murders in Richmond? And why is your concern for Shockoe Bottom security even a thing? Yeah, no thanks. I’ll provide my own security.]
The Chief thinks he is in New York operating under New York law! He told City Council that since New York City has managed to turn Times Square into a gun-free zone, that Richmond might be able to do the same thing with Shockoe Bottom! He can’t do that legally and VCDL will fight any such asinine, unconstitutional attempt in court.
The reporter in the video says that there is a reduction in “most types of violent crime” but doesn’t cite the overall violent crime INCREASE of 3% noted at the very end of the written article.
