Today in the Senate Courts of Justice, Senator Smith's bill to put teeth in preemption, SB 1513, was amended and passed out of committee. It now progresses to the Floor of the Senate.
Also in the Senate Courts of Justice committee today:
SB 1385, Senator Stolle's bill that would require a state police presence at gun shows to be paid by the gun show promoter was withdrawn. We thank Senator Stolle for doing so.
SB 1422, Senator Stolle's bill that would have made a new misdemeanor with up to a 2 year prison term was defeated by a tie vote. The trouble with this bill is that it would disarm someone for life if convicted under that new misdemeanor (any crime that COULD be punished by more than 1 year in jail, disarms you forever under federal law if you are convicted).
On the bad side, Senator Watkin's bill to raise the tax on firearms purchases by 150%, passed out of the Senate. We will fight this hard in the House. There will be an action alert later in the week on this item.
Tomorrow the following bills will be voted on tomorrow:
HB 1587, Delegate Bob Marshall's bill to restrict implementation of REAL ID.
HB 1655, Delegate Bill Carrico's bill to put teeth in preemption.
HB 1851, Delegate Scott Lingamfelter's bill to exempt active duty military from One Handgun a Month.
SB 1513, Senator Ralph Smiths' bill to put teeth in preemption.
HB 2528, Delegate Mark Cole's bill that would require localities to see "gun buy up" guns to an FFL.
SB 1431, Senator Ken Cuccinelli's bill to restrict implementation of REAL ID.
HB 2144, Delegate David Nutter's bill to disallow the State Police from disseminating CHP holder information, but still allows courts to the the same.
HB 2178, Delegate Ed Scott's bill to make a felon possessing ammunition a class 1 misdemeanor.
HB 2136, Delegate Jackson Miller's bill to allow a police officer to arrest at will on a class 1 or class 2 misdemeanor.
