Gun Owner Unfriendly Businesses
We have a "DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL POLICY." NEVER ask if it is OK or for permission to carry anywhere. Don't make an issue of the fact you are carrying. Don't cause problems for future patrons, or even for yourself. The point is, you want to have your defensive tool with you. No one needs to know. Don't make a big deal out of it. Try to be low key. KNOW THE LAW IF YOU ARE GOING TO CARRY OPENLY. PLEASE, don't cause problems that you will then expect others, or us to correct. Thank you.

We maintain the Gun Owner Unfriendly Business List primarily of Virginia oriented and based Gun Unfriendly Businesses. Of course, there is a long list of national companies who want to take away our gun rights. They include:
AMC Theaters
Ben & Jerry's
Crown Central Petroleum
Hallmark Cards
Levi Strauss & Co.
Sara Lee Corporation
Southland Corporation / 7-Eleven
Sport & Health, Inc.
Sprint
Stoneyfield Farms Yogurt
Time Warner

AARP

AARP used to be called the American Association of Retired Persons. For some reason they want to disarm the very people who who are in need of self-defense.

The worst part of this is they don't understand gun bans, like the Brady Act. Thankfully, the gun ban part of Brady is gone.

The Policy Book: AARP Public Policies 2007

Chapter 12, Personal and Legal Rights

Pages 12-31 & 12-31:

FEDERAL POLICY
CRIMINAL JUSTICE
The federal government should:
[...]
Congress should eliminate gaps in and strengthen enforcement of the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and other federal gun laws.

Then on pages 12-31 & 12-32:

STATE POLICY
CRIMINAL JUSTICE
States should:
[...]
[E]nact legislation to eliminate gaps in and strengthen enforcement of federal and state gun laws, particularly with regard to possession by juveniles, convicted domestic abusers and those under domestic violence restraining orders;

Gun Control

AARP believes in the Constitutional right to bear arms. But to make the nation safer, we must do what we can to keep guns out of hands of children and criminals. AARP supported the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, which went into law in 1994 with bi-partisan support, but was allowed to expire this year.

AARP supports measures to eliminate firearm possession by juveniles, convicted domestic abusers and those under domestic violence restraining orders.

Thankfully, the NRA has finally added AARP to their list.

BB&T

BB&T (Branch Banking & Trust Company), headquartered in Winston-Salem, N.C., is a financial holding company. Its bank subsidiaries operate more than 1,100 branch offices in the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Georgia, Maryland, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana, Florida and Washington, D.C. BB&T ranks No. 4 in Virginia. As far as we can tell, BB&T has posted all of their VA bank locations against carrying firearms openly or concealed.

Buffalo Wild Wings

Buffalo Wild Wings was given bad information, or was confused, by a statement by a Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) agent. The ABC agent contacted the manager, and set the record straight. The managers of the restaurant now know that open carry is the only current legal carry method in their ABC licensed restaurant.

The management at this restaurant has decided they wish to ban guns. It is a franchise store. The antigun policy is apparently not the policy of the company. Conversations with the franchisor have lead us to believe this is a rogue store.

Bungalow Billiards

It appears Bungalo Billiards General Manager Kevin M. Tracy has decided they would rather not have the business of lawful gun owners. If you have previously eaten there, you might drop them a letter, or phone call.

Please notice when you read this, that not only don't they trust gun owners, but they don't trust law enforcement either. Note that "police" must be ON DUTY! They apparently don't like the Loudoun County (where the Sterling restaurant is located) deputies either, as they are not members of a police agency.

Bungalo Billiards has locations in Sterling, Chantilly, Franconia, and Shirlington.

The following is the final e-mail received by VCDL member Mike Stollenwork:

Dear Mr. Stollenwork:

After lengthy discussion on this matter, we have decided that we do not want weapons of any type-concealed or non-concealed-worn into our restaurants by any one other than on duty members of a police agency

Although I know that you will be unhappy with our final decision, you have raised our consciousness and created dialogue about this subject that would not have occurred without your input.

Thank You for bringing this sensitive matter to our attention, and for sharing other persons' views and your knowledge of existing legislation with us.

Sincerely ..... Kevin M. Tracy

According to an article in the Washington Post, on Friday afternoon, July 17, 2004, Kevin M. Tracy ordered signs to be posted in the windows of the four The Bungalow restaurants in Northern Virginia. They'll read: "The Bungalow, a Homeland Security model facility. No firearms, no WMDs, safe zone." One is left to wonder what this means.

"Tracy, the restaurants' director of operations, said the small chain decided to ban gun-toting customers in March after a man with a firearm strapped to his hip sat down in its Franconia restaurant and ordered a margarita." Well, that is according to Mr. Tracy, but it is a lie, or at least a lie of omission. It turns out that VCDL Member Mike Stolenwork was the person Tracy spoke with to the Washington Post, however, he doesn't mention Stolenwork ordered a mineral water for himself, and the margarita was for his wife. His 11 year old daughter was along for dinner as well, which was also not mentioned.

Isn't it amazing the lengths the gun haters will go to to attempt to make their irrational point?

First Union Bank
On Monday, January 14th, 2002, a VCDL member noticed a NO WEAPONS sign on the front door of the Fredericksburg branch. When he questioned his loan officer (he declined to close on the loan in protest), the loan officer contacted the Spotsylvania Sheriffs office who then erroneously told the loan officer that it is illegal to carry a firearm into any bank. Needless to say, the bank needs to be properly informed about Virginia law (it is legal to carry in a bank) as well as about how their law-abiding, gun-owning customers feel about the subject.

What happens when you add clean water to dirty water? That's right; you get more dirty water. This is what happened when First Union purchased Wachovia. First Union's reputation was such that they decided to use the Wachovia name. Sadly, they brought all the nasty customer service along to Wachovia, including a very dangerous gun hating policy.

Free Lance-Star

The Fredericksburg, VA Freelance Star has constantly been a gun hating "newspaper." They repeatedly run gun hating and antigun editorials, and their "news" coverage on anything run related has a inevitable anti-gun slant. Their bias doesn't just stay on the editorial pages.

Worse yet, they publish the names and addresses of those in Virginia who have asked permission to exercise the right to carry a concealed handgun for the God given right of self-defense.

We don't normally suggest an outright boycott, but why in the world would a gun owner subscribe to, or purchase this fish-wrap? Furthermore, why support the advertisers who keep this outright biased propaganda organ in business? If you choose not to do business with an advertiser, let them know why.

Great American Restaurants

Great American Restaurants is very hostile toward gun owners. They actually have a policy against allowing the legal carry of handguns in their restaurants. If they see the gun you are REQUIRED to carry openly, they WILL demand you leave. The staff is instructed to tell the manager, and the manager will demand you leave.

Please avoid patronizing any of the Great American Restaurants:
Artie's
Best Buns Bread Company
Carlyle
Costal Flats
Mikes American
Sweetwater Tavern
Silverado

They are also not friendly on the web. Each web page plays music that cannot be turned off via the web page. The only way to kill the awful music is to turn off your speakers, killing anything that you actually WANT to hear. Sad, really sad.

Jared Jewelry

I can write one good thing about Jared, they sure are not shy about posting their anti-self-defense policy by the entrance to their store. Frankly, this is as it should be; if you find a reason to be shy about it, maybe you haven't though out the policy fully.

I once had a boss who told me, "If you are going to make a mistake, make it a big one. If you aren't making mistakes, you aren't taking chances, and you aren't working hard enough for me." Well, he may very well be working for Jared! They have taken the position that they want their stores to be CRIMINAL SAFE CRIME ZONES. I have to give them credit though, they have thought it out. They intend to be robbed. They have done all they can to make it easier for the police to clean up after the fact.

They have made good use of video AND AUDIO surveillance in the store. The manager of the Sterling, Virginia store, Greg Krikorian, stated that ALL CONVERSATIONS ARE RECORDED INSIDE THE STORE! Keep this in mind if you and your spouse are having a private conversation while the sales person is away! I have heard of car dealers doing this, but not jewelry stores.

Mr. Kidorian had no knowledge about Virginia's trespass statute, and did not want to learn. Furthermore, he told me it is ILLEGAL FOR ME TO TAKE PICTURES OF HIS STORE! He wasn't interested in links to web sites on this issue either.

If you are a bad guy, intending on robbing them, you may want to leave your get-away car off the parking lot, and be sure to wear a mask of some sort! OK, I write this in jest, but criminals don't do crime because they are STUPID. There are reasons they choose crime, and it may well be because they are lazy, or don't have the skills for a good job, but not because they are stupid. A criminal wanting something easy is going to the 7-11. The ones who want to "score big" may choose a jewelry store, but they are not going to be stupid about it.

Just as we have seen with banks, criminals are going to choose the POSTED stores, not the ones where people can carry guns. THE POSTED STORES ARE SAFE FOR CRIMINALS!

K-Mart

In an unusual move, K-Mart company officials in Troy, Michigan announced on Thursday June 29th 2001 that they will be phasing out their ammunition sales starting immediately. Three Columbine survivors and filmmaker Michael Moore met with Kmart executives just prior to the decision. To express your displeasure, contact Kmart at 800-247-0200.

Kabuki Japanese Steak House

The Kabuki Japanese Steak and Seafood House in Christiansburg doesn't want your business if you are a gun owner! VCDL Executive Member Dave Knight recounts his experiences there:

My initial visit (in 2005) was very upsetting for my family, as the manager got almost hysterical when I questioned his request ("would it be too much to ask") to put my lawfully open-carried gun in my car.

In August of 2007, I revisited Kabuki to discuss their official firearms policy in a less-stressful way. I have to compliment the manager (one Jeff Hall) because, as soon as I asked about the firearms policy he asked if I had been there before. To avoid diverting the conversation, I said I had not. In any case, he made it clear that guns were "totally unacceptable" there and that HE made the "no guns" policy, not the owner - who he said owns another Kabuki's in Roanoke.

I asserted several times that the statute 18.2-308(O) states that only the owner can ban firearms, and it was certainly the owner's prerogative to do so. He said he "represented the owner", he made the "no guns" policy, and that he was in charge, regardless [of the statute?]. At this point he was starting to get agitated, glancing repeatedly at my cell-phone holster(!), and asked if I was a law enforcement officer. I said "I am, but that is irrelevant to this discussion." He immediately became conciliatory and said "of course uniformed police are welcome to carry sidearms in their holsters". When I told him that off-duty officers would probably carry concealed, because they are not obliged by 18.2-308(J3) to carry openly in establishments that sell alcohol for on-premises consumption, he seemed a little surprised, but went on to say that "the owner does not know or care that [he] made this policy". I wonder what prompted him to make such an odd, and self-contradictory statement. Regardless, that concluded our discussion, we shook hands, and I left.

Langley Federal Credit Union

This message was sent by member Jeff Reed:

I was going to go into a Langley Federal Credit Union in Newport News when I saw on their front exterior door two of the international style "No Gun" signs and the wording, something to the effect of, "Firearms not allowed. Those found with them will be considered to be trespassing and will be prosecuted." Needless to say I won't be doing any business there.

Langley FCU has 12 branches in the Tidewater area. I spoke with Eddie Allen (757-827-7200) who told me the board of directors established the policy and that it applied to all the branches. He didn't know who specifically brought it or when the policy was implemented but said he'd call me back with more info.

Eddie never did call me back. All 12 Tidewater area branch numbers are the same number. I've checked all three of the branches in Newport News and they all sport the same decal on their doors.

Member Thomas Robeson sent a copy of a letter he received from the Langley Federal Credit Union. Basically the letter said that the credit union did not want permit holders carrying in their bank and they would prosecute.

Perhaps carrying your money to another bank would be less offensive to them.

Lynnhaven Mall

Is yet another business stupidly making their facility more unsafe under the guise of trying to make it more safe? Doesn't anyone realize that bad guys carry their guns ILLEGALLY already, and no SIGN is going to stop their already illegal activity? If signs worked, why not post signs at the city limits stating, "No crime is allowed in Virginia Beach?" Come on -- all they are doing is driving off law abiding gun owners. Additionally, the only thing anyone openly carrying or carrying concealed with a permit would be guilty of would be TRESPASSING, and only then if when discovered and asked to leave, they refused.

How stupid are these signs? How stupid are the people who request they be installed? Very stupid, in my humble opinion.

Macados

3744 Candlers Mountain Rd
Lynchburg, VA 24502
Reeber Timmons, Manager
Phone 434-845-6464

Macado's is a regional franchise operation, in SW Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia. The company does not have a gun policy, but the manager of this franchise, Reeber Timmons, says that "guns and alcohol don't mix." The restaurant is not posted, but the manager will ask you to put your gun in your car if you carry openly in his restaurant.

Of course, because of the Restaurant Association of Virginia (part of the Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association), and State Senator Bill Mims, and over the past few years, Delegate Lee Ware, open carry is the only legal way to carry in a restaurant with a license to sell alcohol for consumption on premises.

If you live in the area, please feel free to let Mr. Timmons know that your money and his policy don't mix either. I think it a good idea to enclose a receipt from a nearby restaurant, especially is it is particularly large.

http://www.macados.com

Of course, it is always a good idea to ensure you do not patronize any member restaurants of the Restaurant Association of Virginia, since they are the main reason we got, and have not been able to overturn the "Restaurant Ban."

The search engine on the Restaurant Association of Virginia web site is intentionally poor, but just select "All" and get a complete list of restaurants to avoid.

Nova Jeepers Association

NOVA Jeepers has changed their guns policy, and it is much better. There isn't an outright ban, but they reserve the right to ban guns as they see fit at any event. We thank them for fixing a broken policy, but don't see the need to go beyond the law. Why ever ban guns? There new policy is here, and reads in part:

1.1 CODE OF RESPONSIBILITIES
[...]
1.1.4 Members will abide by federal and state laws governing the possession, transport, discharge, or any other use of a firearm or other weapon while participating in NVJA activities. Members will abide by event-specific prohibitions on such items per the discretion of the NVJA.

Their old, much more onerous policy is located here.

Outback Steakhouse (Fairfax)

Joe Ortega, Proprietor (which means he holds a 10% equity stake in the restaurant)

While many Outback Steakhouses are members of the gun-hating Restaurant Association of Virginia, not many actually ban guns as they don't have a problem with guns or law abiding gun owners. Joe Ortega forbids carry in his restaurant contrary to the policy of MOST Outback Steakhouse restaurants.

Mr. Ortega has repeatedly stated that it is company policy not to allow guns. This is not true.

It is a good idea though, to check to see of the Outback Steakhouse you are considering patronizing belongs to the Restaurant Association of Virginia before spending your hard earned money in restaurants which keep the Restaurant Association of Virginia in a position to continue to lobby against the repeal of the Restaurant Ban. If you avoid a Outback because of there membership, please let them know, and let them know how much you spent at nearby restaurants. A letter with an enclosed receipt is a wonderful way.

PTA

THAT'S RIGHT! YOUR SCHOOL'S PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION:

The following is the paragraph from the PTA Web Site:

'Due to the increasing ease of access to firearms and increase in firearm-related deaths, PTAs are encouraged to alert parents and communitie [SIC] to the harm of handgun violence, and to collaborate with other groups concerned with gun violence. National PTA supports a waiting period for the purchase of any firearm and opposes the manufacturing and/or ownership of certain semiautomatic assault weapons, look-alike weapons, and Saturday Night Specials, and opposes the possession of nonpowder [SIC] firearms on school grounds.'

Editor's Note: The National PTA cannot even spell!

Also, see the following web page for their "list of resolutions." Be careful, it may make you sick.

http://www.vapta.org/Committees/Legislation/VA_Program/resolutions/resolution_list.htm

This should make you sick too:

http://www.virginiaclubforgrowth.org/articles/102903PRCommentary.htm

Of course, searching the web, using Google or your favorite search engine will surely bring up more.

Please keep this in mind before you donate one DIME to your local PTA!

Editor's Note: When I was in high school, (Class of 1973) in Montgomery County, Maryland, many students hunted before and after school. It was considered unsafe to leave our guns in cars and trucks in the parking lot. The school had tall thin lockers and short squat, double stacked lockers. Hunters with the tall thin lockers just put their firearms in their lockers. My classmates with the short, squat, double stacked lockers, would take their firearms into the school office (the only air conditioned area in the school) and hand them to the office ladies. They would put the gun in a corner for the day until the student came back at the end of the day. No claim checks or anything. No problems either.

Red Lobster

VCDL President, Philip Van Cleave has learned Darden Restaurants doesn't want our business, at least not in their Red Lobster restaurants. It is unclear, though likely, they don't want our business in their other restaurants as well; Olive Garden, Smokey Bones BBQ, and Seasons 52. Darden does NOT franchise, so every one of their restaurants are company owned, so this would be a national policy.

If you used to go to any Darden restaurant, you should tell them why you won't be back.

Dear Mr. Van Cleave,

Thank you for your interest in Red Lobster; it is always a pleasure to hear from our guests.

Red Lobster does not permit weapons of any kind in our restaurants, whether unconcealed or not. This policy is in effect for the safety and comfort of our guests and employees.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Sincerely,

Stephen
Sr. Guest Relations Representative

Richbrau Brewing Co.

Ignoring the fact that permit holders are among the most law abiding people in the Commonwealth, Richbrau owner Mike Byrne has decided to ban all guns in his restaurant. One has to wonder how many people have been harmed at his restaurant, and on the way home by firearms, as contrasted with the number harmed as a result of the alcohol he serves?

The Rivermill Map Company does not make maps, but they do make beer. Apparently they cater to college students during pub crawls (do a Google search), and they don't trust law abiding gun owners. While the restaurant is not posted, they will ask you to leave if you are legally carrying a gun.

A phone call from the VCDL President confirmed the policy.

Short Pump Town Center

Short Pump Town Center, in Richmond, VA, has taken the unfortunate decision to ban legally carried handguns. They, like so many other people who lack the ability to use logic at all, don't seem to realize that criminals don't care about their signs. They also ignore the fact that permit holders have proven to be the most law abiding, and safest citizens of the Commonwealth.

One is forced to wonder what they think they are going to accomplish by banning legally carried firearms, while allowing criminals free reign. They have made it a CRIMINAL SAFE ZONE! What is it they are trying to accomplish? When will they learn?

Smith & Wesson

NOTE: THE NEW OWNERS HAVE DONE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO FIX THE EGREGIOUS AGREEMENT THE PREVIOUS OWNERS SIGNED WITH THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION. OUR CALL FOR A BOYCOTT OF SMITH & WESSON STILL STANDS!

The Virginia Citizens Defense League, Inc. is calling for all supporters of the Second Amendment to vote with their pocket books, and refuse to purchase any products from Smith & Wesson. This boycott is the only viable course of action against a corporate management which has agreed with the Clinton administration to impose regulations on the American people which they could not get from our elected representatives. Smith & Wesson has agreed to impose on its dealers requirements that they not sell guns at gun shows when private sales occur without a background check, even though such sales would otherwise be lawful. Further, each sale of Smith & Wesson firearms must include a written certification that the purchaser has obtained training in the safe handling and storage of firearms.

A more important issue is that guns cannot be transferred as allowed under the Brady Law if the background check is not completed in the legally allowed time. One must wait for the background check to be complete, even if it is dragged out for months. Remember how the National Instant Check System was down for days on the weekend of the so called "Million Mom March?"

The sale of Smith & Wesson to a US based company is irrelevant to the issue. Neither the old company (Tompkins), nor the new company (then called Saf-T-Hammer), have done anything to void the March 17, 2000 agreement. At the February 2002 S. H. O. T. Show in Las Vegas, then Smith & Wesson President, Bob Scott, admitted to me and another activist, that the agreement is still in place, and if we get a new US President, it could immediately be enforced. Please look at the agreement to remind yourself as to how egregious is at:

http://www.hud.gov/library/bookshelf18/pressrel/gunagree.html

The agreement contains nearly all of the items on the gun haters wish list. Please look at the web page. If it doesn't make you angry, you are not a supporter of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. On principle, we oppose those who would ban Smith & Wesson's new gun, or any other gun. However, we hope no supporter of our gun rights will support Smith & Wesson by purchasing it, or any other of their guns, until they void the HUD agreement.

Let's be clear; Smith & Wesson cannot be allowed to hide behind the notion that we are better off that it is owned by a US company, than an UK company. So far, both companies are exactly the same; they both are supportive of the agreement they made with Clinton's HUD.

GRPC Resolution Concerning Smith & Wesson

Spotsylvania Mall

Spotsylvania Mall has a very inconsistent attitude towards honest, law abiding citizens being made defenseless against the criminal predators that live among us. Some entrances of the mall are posted, while others are not, nor are the anchor stores.

On the one hand, one could just avoid the doors which are posted, but a better tactic is to just take our business elsewhere.

Springfield Mall

Springfield Mall, at the Washington, DC Beltway and I-95, doesn't want your business. On their web page they have posted the following:

Springfield Mall Rules of Conduct
Springfield Mall, including its designated roadways and parking areas, is private property. In order to provide a safe, secure and pleasant environment we ask your cooperation by following these Rules of Conduct.

Possession of a weapon, even if legally carried, except by law enforcement officers.

This is posted here

So, once again, a place with a crime problem wants to ban HONEST, LAW ABIDING people from being able to defend themselves. I used to really like this mall, but there is NO WAY I am going there now.

They may have better luck banning gang colors and visible gang tattoos from their property!

TGI Fridays

The parent company of T.G.I.Friday's, Carlson Restaurants Worldwide, Inc. has a company policy that no one may carry a gun in their restaurants. This came to light as a result of an open carry incident in a T.G.I. Friday's restaurant in Alexandria.

The manager told the patron that there is a company policy prohibiting guns in any of their restaurants.

It turns out this is true. Guns are banned in company stores. There are SUPPOSED to be "No Guns" signs at the front doors, though the Alexandria company owned store has no such sign as this is written (7/5/07), but it is assumed that since this has been so highly publicized, this sign will be posted soon.

The company allows franchisees to set their own rules regarding guns. If anyone knows of any franchisee who doesn't want to ban guns, let us know and we will post it here, with their permission.

I have yet to see a single T.G.I. Friday's posted. Still, now that I know they don't like us, I will be voting with my feet and not patronizing their restaurants, with gun or without.

Tinseltown USA Movie Theater

The Tinseltown USA movie theater does not want our business. Not only is the theater posted, but the manager is intractable in his position.

Value City Furniture

It appears that Value City Furniture doesn't want the business of gun owners either. Please feel free to let them now why you are taking your business elsewhere.

It seriously makes one wonder if they really think such signs make criminals stay away! In fact, since such signs make criminal safe, lawful gun owner free zones, THEY ARE ACTUALLY INVITING CRIMINALS TO THEM! Such stupidity is really amazing!

Wachovia

What happens when you pour clean, pure water into dirty water? Right -- you get more dirty water. This is what happened with the merger of Wachovia and First Union banks. Instead of putting Wachovia's good rules over the entire company, they decided to apply First Union's anti-self defense rules over the entire company.

Since this merger, many VCDL members have reported to us that they have closed accounts. One was told to use the drive through, as some other customers do who don't wish to enter a bank which has posted itself as a criminal safe zone.

Management at the bank don't think we have common sense. They have procedures in place that dictate that in any robbery the money is just given up. It is insured by our federal government, so they don't care. Well, neither do we! Gun owners are not going to put themselves in the position of protecting the bank's money, insured or not! There are two real reasons to carry a concealed handgun into a bank though; first, it is best not to leave a gun in the car. It can get stolen, or get taken away if the car is stolen. Either way, the gun is now in the hands of a criminal, and I think we can all agree, that is not a good thing!

Additionally, if something goes terribly wrong, one might find oneself in need of it for self defense, not only inside the bank, but more likely, on the way in or out.
